How to Stay in Shape at the Desk

by Bethany on December 28, 2011

Many of us have lifestyles that require us to sit down for hours on end, day in and day out. I myself don’t move around much as I’m studying for law school and I don’t get a lot of time to exercise or move about.

However, after receiving a hefty chiropractor bill I realized that sitting nonstop all day is playing havoc with my health! Therefore, I have started to incorporate some basic exercise techniques and practices to make sure that I do in fact get some form of daily exercise

Here are some of my top suggestions:

Take the Stairs

When I go to class, it is so tempting for me to take the elevator, but taking the stairs allows me to burn some much needed calories and improve my heart rate.

Try to always take the stairs when you can, you will be amazed how much this can help you shift extra weight and help you stay fit.

Stretch it Out

If you are sitting down for hours at a time, make sure you get up and stretch around every 30 minutes. This will allow not too much tension to gather in your body and should help to relieve any aches and pains you may have.

Take a Walk

If you don’t have time or just don’t like going to the gym, try taking a walk every day instead. A brisk 20-30 minute walk each day can help you become a lot healthier and it can also be a great stress reliever.

Even if you can’t leave your desk for that long, just take a walk across the office or around your apartment a few times a day.

Use Weights

Have some light weights next to your desk. These can be great stress relievers and can help you get the toned arms you always dreamed of! Try and do several sets of reps every day and before you know it you will likely have visible muscles without ever having to step foot in a gym!

Sit Upright

It is so easy to slouch or learn forward while at the computer or at your books, but this is very bad for your posture and can lead to significant back and neck problems.

Make sure you sit upright whenever you are at your desk and this should help you avoid from getting too uncomfortable or stiff. This won’t help you get fit, but it will make exercising and stretching a less painful experience.

There are so many easy ways you can stay in shape even if you have to sit at the desk for prolonged periods of time. Try and incorporate some of these steps into your everyday routine and you should notice improvements in your health and fitness levels in no time. Good Luck!
