What You Need To Know Before Taking Bikram Yoga

So what happens in a Bikram yoga class and what are the benefits? If you watch a Bikram yoga video or join a class you will see poses being practiced by the yogis. People will be sweating quite extremely and yet still continue to practice. This is all part of the way Bikram yoga has been designed. You will see the 26 postures done in sequence, each one being repeated twice. This kind of yoga is usually practiced in a hot room, hence the name ‘Hot Yoga’. The heat and subsequent sweating increases the effectiveness of Bikram yoga.

You will notice in class that each step is practiced very slowly. This is not like an aerobics class with quick movements but requires deep focus and concentration. It’s important to keep your fluids up and drink lots of water as the class usually runs for 90 minutes.

A Bikram yoga video or class shows people of all age groups doing yoga. It is advisable to take a towel to put over the mat and a small towel to wipe your face as you will be sweating quite profusely. Sweating is proved to be beneficial as it helps to release toxins from the body. People wear typical yoga clothes to do all the poses perfectly and comfortably. They fit perfectly, not tight and not loose. Most of them wear shorts and tank tops.

A video can often be just as good as attending a Bikram yoga class. Through the video close ups are normally shown with each pose and from different angles so you can get a good idea how to do them yourself.

As Bikram Yoga is done in a room of about 40.5C or 105F it is best not to wear heavy clothing. Find something that is comfortable and won’t cause you to become too hot during the 90 minute class.

For men it is advised that shorts and a tank top be worn. Avoid any long clothing in which you may feel restricted as some of the poses are quite difficult.

For women, leotards or shorts and tank tops are usually worn. Find something that makes you feel more confident if you are going to be practicing with other people.

Remember to wear clothes that absorb moisture and keep your fluid levels up.

Which Yoga Clothes Are Best For Bikram Yoga?

by Kurma Rosen

If you haven’t heard of Bikram Yoga, it is one of the newer members of the yoga world. It is often referred to as “hot house” yoga because it is practiced in yoga studios that have the temperature turned up as high as 105 degrees. These rooms also have a humidity level of 40%. We’re talking hot here, folks.

Bikram Yoga is named for its founder, Bikram Choudhury, which he based on the classical yoga style. It uses 26 postures, or asanas, and 2 breath work patterns, or pranayama. Other people have copied this system as it has become so popular.

I think the sweating is a given in any yoga class but with the amount of heat in Bikram Yoga classes you can be guaranteed to sweat buckets. This leads to the obvious question of what to wear in these classes.

Without a doubt your first consideration should be comfort. And they must be functional as well. Freedom of movement is a necessity so you are not restricted in any way. And please, buy a nice fabric that feels soft against your skin.

In that you know that you will be sweating here more than other yoga schools, you want this fabric to be very absorbent. Some work better than others in this regard. No one like the clammy feel of soaking wet yoga pants against them.

Although yoga claims to be a unified system of body, mind and spirit, a lot of people practice yoga to tone their muscles and developing greater awareness. Given this fact, is there anything wrong with wanting to look good while you are in your yoga studio practicing your postures?

Of course you could always stay at home to practice, sitting around in your Grateful Dead T-Shirt and Bermuda shorts. But since you’ve worked as hard as you have to look as good as you do, why not show it off?

So, maybe you want to shop around for some tight form fitting little number to wear to your Bikram Yoga class. Sure, let everyone see those deft lines and slinky curves as you tie yourself up those pretzel like poses.

These sorts of yoga clothes will also let you see exactly what the poses look and feel like; are you doing them correctly?

The Proper Yoga Clothing To Wear To A Bikram Yoga Class

by Kurma Rosen

Assuming you have read my last foray into the yoga clothes article world, “What Yoga Clothes Should I Wear To A Bikram Yoga Class”, you’ll remember that I told you that Bikram Yoga is a sort of “hot house yoga”. Now I’d like to further delve into the concept that there may be particular types of yoga clothes that you’ll want to buy for your next Bikram Yoga class.

Yoga Pants Clearly there are several different types of yoga pants. You’ve probably seen those that are full length as well as the Capri type that end just below your knee. Of course, you can always just opt for wearing shorts as well.

Naturally you may have to pick between flowing yoga pants and the styles that fit closer to your form. Form fitting are good because your instructor is able to see the lines of your body in order to tell if you are doing the postures right or not. That way, he or she can correct your posture properly.

The thing about the flowing yoga pants is that they are able to hide those areas of your body that you don’t want just anyone to see. Perhaps you are modest or feel you will look a lot better later.

Yoga Wear Tops Choosing yoga wear tops is similar to choosing yoga pants in that you’ll want to look for those that are either form fitting or loose and flowing. You could choose a t-shirt style or a tank top made of linen or hemp, maybe with one of those “Om” symbols printed on to it, if that matches your style.

Yoga wear tops come in many popular styles and colors so you should never run out of endless ideas on what sort of yoga clothing to wear to your Bikram Yoga classes.

Yoga Shoes Most people dont even bother with this sort of item, preferring instead to practice barefoot. That said, you may want to look into some sort of comfortable footwear just in case you decide you want to practice on some stony beachmaybe in the Caribbean? Just a thought.

I know people who like to wear those little cotton bottomed tai chi shoes. But you might want something with a little more support, like what Puma and Adidas make. These companies are very sympathetic to yoga types.

So, in closing, make sure that the yoga clothing you buy is fun, practical and comfortable and in the long run youre practice will improve dramatically!
