What Are the Types of Mesothelioma?

by Tamara Messotom on September 8, 2009

A rare form of cancer called mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos. In the US, an estimated 2,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. The condition is a bit difficult to diagnose because the symptoms often resemble those of other more common illnesses (like pneumonia, bronchitis, and other less serious disorders). Prognosis is poor. There is no permanent cure but there are several treatment options available

Asbestos is known as a miracle mineral because of its properties like resistance to heat, electrical, and chemical damage. It is also durable and flexible. By itself and when still whole, asbestos is not harmful. Asbestos dust and fibers are microscopic so they can be inhaled and/ingested unknowingly. Once inside the body, the fibers will remain lodged in the tissues and cause inflammation that will result to malignant tumors.

Three Main Types of Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is found in the membrane that covers the lungs. This is the most common because it accounts for two-third of all cases. Signs of this type include: pain and tightness in the chest, dry and painful cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, and fatigue.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma This is the type that affects the lining of abdominal cavities. Symptoms are: swelling/pain in the stomach, vomiting, weight loss, bowel obstruction, and fatigue.

Pericardial mesothelioma is found in the sac that covers the heart. People who are inflicted with this type often suffer from chest pain, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma

Patients must inform their doctors about a history of asbestos exposure when seeking medical attention. A battery of medical tests will be performed to confirm the condition. These are chest x-rays, biopsy, MRI, and CT scan.

With a positive result, the doctor and patient will then discuss possible treatment options, which include: surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. There are alternative therapies available to those who want a different approach to treatment. Patients are also welcome to participate in clinical trials.
