Despite the efforts people put in on a daily basis to stay healthy they end up getting colds anyway. Antibiotics are not very effective when it comes to treating viruses but there are some other methods that one can use reduce a cold.

Among the different means of treating colds is use of Echinacea although it is not the favored herb anymore for treating colds. Echinacea can be used to reduce symptoms of the conditions if taken when at the colds onset.

Latest studies have not been able to prove that if a patient takes Vitamin C in very large quantities they will be able to get rid of their cold. The patient might however be able to reduce the time their cold will take cold by taking supplements of vitamin C.

Vitamin C should not be taken in huge doses as it only washes down peoples systems. Among the most favored means of treating colds naturally is the use of elder berries. This berry has been used as a cure for generations and research has revealed that the berry has the ability to suppress influenzas growth.

Chicken soup has been known to ease symptoms associated with colds for many years and should be taken as soon as one starts exhibiting the symptoms. The chicken soup should also include onions, garlic, celery and leek. Garlic is helpful as it contains substances with the ability to boost the immune.

Garlic has substances that can help boost the patients immunity and reduce the patients pain. Chicken soup should always be kept ready by making it and freezing it incase there is an outbreak.

Andrographis provides another means for reducing the symptoms associated with colds. Patients immunity can be stimulated by Andrographis as well. The ability of reducing fever with no stomach upsets is among the qualities that are unique to this agent.

Astragalus which is also known as natures antibiotic has been in use in China for two thousand years. People believe the herb can fight pathogens off and build the immune system up. One can take the herb on a daily basis or when the cold starts.

When having a cold one should take supplements like antioxidant vitamins, Zinc of 50 to 100 mg and L-lysine of 500 to 1000mg ; an amino acid. The supplement should be taken at the onset of a cold outbreak.

Stressful conditions should be avoided and one should get the necessary rest. Healthy eating is also vital when reducing a cold.
