Food and its Effect on High Blood Pressure

My goal in my life and in my career is to help people cure themselves with natural methods. By providing your body with the ingredients needed to help itself back to health, you are helping yourself regain health without modern medication. Not all medications are bad, however most carry a list of side effects that are sometimes worse than the disease it treats.

Doctors are quick to prescribe blood pressure medicine and it is generally convenient to take, but it can leave a person with new and usually surprising problems. Side effects include headaches, dizziness, nausea, joint pain, fatigue and sexual dysfunction - and these are just a few of a large list. Some of the more serious side effects even include stroke and heart attack (the very problems the drugs are designed to prevent).

While I advise against taking such medications, please be sure to consult with a doctor if you’re currently taking blood pressure medicine and choose to discontinue it, even if you are experiencing any of the above side effects. Even if you choose to pursue natural treatments, please discuss any problems that you’re having with the medications first.

A tried-and-true method to combating high blood pressure is to watch what you eat. If you eat healthier foods, you can maintain or even lower your blood pressure, while staying in control of everything you ingest. This is a popular topic of discussion among my readers. I’ve listed a few food options below that you might consider adding to your daily diet:

Munching away on a nice green celery stick or a big glass of juice will be beneficial to your health and to your blood pressure. Celery is said to be a natural diuretic and have a negative caloric effect, which means that it actually requires more calories to digest it than the food contains. Try eating it fresh or juice it with some carrots for a tasty beverage.

Another great food item to add to your diet is papaya. Some naturopaths recommend eating papaya daily on an empty stomach for a month and see how much it lowers your blood pressure. Eat it alone and avoid eating anything else for at least two hours afterward.

Garlic may well be the fastest acting natural blood pressure reducing food. I’ve actually witnessed it lowering a person’s blood pressure minutes after they ate it. Eat garlic in its natural clove form or use it to cook with in your meals; whichever way you prefer, garlic can sure pack a punch!

Don’t like papaya or garlic? Try instead to reduce the amount of fat, sugar, and red meat you eat every day. This will not only help lower your blood pressure, but can also help to lower your cholesterol.

Based on scientific studies centered on reduced sodium diets, The DASH eating plan even provides specific diet and serving recommendations. Those suffering from high blood pressure benefited most from the eating plan, but it also proved beneficial to people who had pre-hypertension by lowering their blood pressure.

The DASH plan chooses foods from several different categories, including whole grains, raw vegetables, fruits and non-fat or low fat dairy products. You can also eat fats and oils, but in limited quantities of course.

Poor choices in your daily diet is not the only thing to cause high blood pressure. Stress can also be a major contributor. If you live a stress-free life and have high blood pressure, try to relax and manage your stress and you might just find that your blood pressure reaps the benefits as well.
