Alcohol Addiction Affects You As Well As Those Around You

When do you know that it is time to seek alcohol rehab? This can be a hard question to answer. The consumption of alcohol is thought by many as a social experience that you do within a group setting. But for those in need of alcohol rehab, that is not the case.

The effects of alcoholism vary from person to person, but the most common effects seen are changes in a person's emotional state, behavior, and personality. Those who need alcoholic rehab may become angry and argumentative, or quiet and withdrawn or depressed when they are drinking.

Alcohol contributes to 100,000 deaths each year, making it the third leading cause of preventable mortality. One-third of those deaths are from suicides or accidents such as drowning, head injuries from falling, or car crashes.

Other things you might notice from someone who has an alcohol addiction could be changes in behaviors like breaking family commitments, both major and minor, spending more money than planned, drinking while driving and getting arrested.

Accidents and suicides that are associated with alcohol problems are especially prominent in teens. Teens that begin drinking before the age of 15 are also twice as likely to develop an alcohol abuse problem and four times more likely to develop alcohol dependency, compared with a person who did not begin drinking before the age of 21.

Usually, it will take someone in an alcoholic's life to bring it to their attention. That's why it's important in recognizing the signs. These signs make themselves known in the form of cravings, loss of control, physical dependence, and tolerance.

Even if you know someone that you think might have an alcohol problem, do your part to help. Organize an intervention if you have to, but do something that will get a person you care about the help they need with alcohol rehab.
